How do you update a mermaid?
You take note of the obesity epidemic and make her healthier.
You look at literacy rates and make her smarter. You add a few fresh coats of paint and make her prettier.
Then you line her and her friends up along city streets and add a fairy-tale adventure. You name it the Heart & Art Mermaid Story Trails (Download a printable Map), and you unveil it at Harborfest.
That's just what city officials and trail creators plan to do at Nauticus at 1 p.m. Thursday to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Mermaids on Parade.
"It was either time for more mermaids or it would just fade away," said Lisa Suhay, author of the children's book There Goes a Mermaid!
"And everyone in the city said more mermaids, please."
