Norfolk Unveils First New Official Mermaid in 5 Years

FedEx CEO Flying in to Unveil Mermaid Anniversary Gift to the City

Maid On TimeApril 20th at 1:30 p.m. is the launch of the FedEx mermaid Maid On Time at the Kirn Memorial Library. Ê
When hurricane season diverted our city's charity book for children to the wrong coast, just days before the official launch, FedEx made the amazing effort to assist the Literacy Partnership and The Virginian-Pilot Joy Fund by moving 10,500 copies of There Goes a Mermaid! A NorFolktale from California to Norfolk, free of charge.

Now, the President & CEO of FedEX Freight, Hampton native Doug Duncan, is flying in by corporate jet with his whole team for the unveiling of their gift to the Kirn Memorial Library and Norfolk, the 10-foot-long mermaid Maid On Time.

A fleet of FedEx trucks will receive a police escort to bring in the mermaid and some surprises.ÊMayor Paul D. Fraim will officiate. In attendance will be: mermaid Artist Georgia Mason,ÊAmerican Heart Association board members and Nauticus representatives, plus school children performing the Norfolk Mermaid Song and real live mermaids.

This event marks the beginning of the celebration of the Fifth Anniversary of Mermaids On Parade and one of the final steps in completing the City's new healthy heart mermaid trail system.

Five years ago Norfolk placed colorful mermaids throughout the city as part of a public art project.Ê The mermaids have taken on a life of their own and are now helping the City fight illiteracy and encouraging children to become "heart healthy."

HEart and Art Mermaid Story Trails Through a unique partnership with The Virginian-Pilot Newspaper and The American Heart Association and a local author, this June, Norfolk will launch the Heart & Art Mermaid Story Trails.

This trail system will allow families to exercise together, walking from mermaid to mermaid, viewing the colorful sculptures and reading the "page" of a new mermaid tale attached to each sculpture Three walking trails, totaling 10,000 healthy heart steps. Three mermaid tales. To read each tale in its entirety, walkers must complete each trail.

Also partnering the city in this effort are: FedEx Corporation, Nauticus, Chrysler Museum of Art, McArthur Mall, Norfolk Public Schools and Norfolk Public Library system.

Attached is the marker that will be #1 on all trails, located at Nauticus.

The actual trail launch will take place with the Mayor and council walking the trail at Nauticus June 9th at NOON.
