Book Review - Pre-K-Grade 5
Most visitors to Norfolk, Virginia notice mermaid sculptures gracing the city streets. Lisa Suhay, has built a tale that inspires young and old to seek out the Norfolk mermaids and observe their fishy behavior.
Like the Selchies, the Norfolk mermaids are transformational. The book contains two stories in one. The main text tells the tale of the Norfolk mermaids and how they change their shape from water to women to move about the city. The main tale highlights many of the cities' sculptures that the mermaids use as apartments while highlighting the geographical assets of Norfolk. The second story is a bonus found at the bottom of each page where preschoolers can enjoy a bouncy verse.
Soft watercolor illustrations are combined with photographs of the actual sculptures to support the story. Readers are encouraged to use map-reading skills and find the mermaids by using the Downtown Norfolk Mermaid Spotting Map located in the back of the book. There Goes Mermaid ~ A NorfolkTale has special appeal to visitors and residents of Norfolk, Virginia.
